Two balances, two jobs
Etihad Guest Miles are the miles you spend on rewards. Tier Miles are counted separately and only decide your membership level - Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Emerald.
Guide · Etihad Guest
Etihad Guest is the loyalty programme of Etihad Airways, and its currency is the Etihad Guest Mile. This guide covers how the miles work, what they are worth in dirhams and dollars, and how UAE credit cards earn them, with every figure taken from the official programme pages.
Etihad Guest Miles are the reward points of Etihad Guest, the loyalty programme of Etihad Airways, the UAE national airline based in Abu Dhabi. You collect miles when you fly with Etihad or its partner airlines, stay at partner hotels, shop with retail partners, or spend on an Etihad Guest credit card. You then swap those miles for flights, cabin upgrades, shopping and more, with reward flights advertised from 10,000 miles.
Joining is free for anyone aged two or above. Every new member starts at Bronze tier, gets a digital membership card in the Etihad app, and begins earning straight away.
Etihad Guest Miles are the miles you spend on rewards. Tier Miles are counted separately and only decide your membership level - Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Emerald.
Most activity earns both at once. A flight earns Guest Miles and Tier Miles side by side, and the UAE co-branded credit cards add both on everyday spending too.
A family head aged 21 or over can link up to nine relatives, so everyone's Guest Miles pool into one spendable balance while each member keeps their own tier progress.
The programme runs two mileage counters at the same time, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion. This is all it comes down to:
| Etihad Guest Miles | Tier Miles | |
|---|---|---|
| What they do | Pay for flights, upgrades, shopping and other rewards | Move you up the membership tiers |
| Can you spend them? | Yes | No - they only count towards status |
| How you earn them | Flights, credit cards, hotels and retail partners | The same activity, tracked on its own counter |
| Validity | 18 months for Bronze, Silver and Gold members; never expire for Platinum and Emerald | Counted over a rolling 12-month qualification window |
Tiers, thresholds and the benefits of each level have their own page: Etihad Guest tiers and Tier Miles, explained.
There are three main routes, and they stack: fly, put everyday spending on a co-branded card, and shop with partners.
Miles depend on the fare and the distance. Etihad's own calculator shows a one-way Abu Dhabi to London flight earning anything from 175 miles on a Basic Economy fare up to 10,500 miles in First on a Deluxe fare. On the India routes, Abu Dhabi to Mumbai earns 63 to 3,750 miles by fare and cabin, and Abu Dhabi to Kochi 88 to 5,250. Higher tiers earn a bonus on top: Silver adds 25%, Gold 50%, Platinum and Emerald 100%.
Twelve UAE cards from Emirates NBD, Emirates Islamic, ADIB and FAB earn Etihad Guest Miles on every purchase - all of them are listed further down this page. Miles land in your Etihad Guest account automatically every statement cycle, and the same cards earn Tier Miles on top.
Hotels, car hire and Miles on the Go retail partners all earn miles. You can also buy up to 100,000 miles a year outright with BuyMiles (150,000 for Platinum members), or multiply recent earning with MilesBooster by up to 150,000 extra miles a year.
Not ready for a co-branded card? Some flexible bank programmes also convert into Etihad Guest Miles - ADCB TouchPoints and Emirates Islamic SmartMiles both list Etihad Guest as a transfer partner.
There is no single official exchange rate: a mile's value depends on how you spend it. Two official reference points put a floor and a realistic range under that value.
The cash floor. Etihad's own Reward Card - a prepaid card you load straight from your miles balance through the Reward Shop - converts miles to money at 1.4 to 1.6 miles per US cent. That prices 1,000 miles at roughly USD 6.25 to 7.15, or about AED 23 to AED 26, before a small loading fee of around USD 0.99. That makes a mile worth about 2.5 fils in guaranteed cash.
Flights usually pay more. Compare the cash fare on your dates with the miles price and you will usually beat the Reward Card rate - sometimes by a wide margin in Business and First.
Flying home to India? Etihad prices rewards dynamically and publishes no fixed rate for Abu Dhabi to Mumbai or Kochi, but short routes like these sit closest to the programme's advertised 10,000-mile floor - reward trackers typically show one-way Economy Saver awards to India between roughly 10,000 and 15,000 miles (per third-party sources). Check your exact dates on etihad.com before you plan.
| Miles | Cash value via the Reward Card | What it means for flights |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | about AED 23 to 26 (USD 6.25 to 7.15) | Part-payment towards any booking |
| 10,000 | about AED 230 to 260 | Etihad's advertised starting point for reward flights - short hops such as Abu Dhabi to Mumbai or Kochi price closest to this floor |
| 25,000 | about AED 575 to 655 | One-way Economy reward from Abu Dhabi to Vienna (from-price) |
| 45,000 | about AED 1,030 to 1,180 | One-way Economy reward from Abu Dhabi to Tokyo (from-price) |
Conversion rate from the official Etihad Reward Shop FAQ; flight from-prices from etihad.com, both checked in August 2026. Reward availability varies by date, and taxes and fees on reward flights are paid in cash.
Flights are the headline use, but far from the only one:
Two rules worth knowing: reward seats themselves earn no miles, and when you pay with miles plus cash you only earn miles on the cash part.
For Bronze, Silver and Gold members, miles are valid for 18 months - and taking a qualifying flight with Etihad or a partner airline extends the balance by a further 18 months. For Platinum and Emerald members, miles never expire. Keeping a co-branded card active makes steady earning automatic, which is the easiest way to stay ahead of the clock.
