Rewards buying guide
Points are worth what you can redeem them for
Every rewards programme sets its own exchange rate, and banks are not obliged to advertise it in dirhams. Before comparing earn rates, find out what a thousand points is actually worth at redemption - as statement credit, as a voucher, or transferred into an airline programme. A card earning twice the points can still pay less.
Then check what the points are good for. Points that convert only into one retailer's vouchers are a discount at that retailer. Points that convert to cash, or transfer into a frequent flyer programme, behave much more like money.
Of the 33 rewards cards on this page, 18 carry no annual fee and the most expensive costs AED 1,575 a year. Minimum salaries run from AED 5,000 to AED 30,000 a month, across 10 banks.
Find the cash value first
Divide the redemption value by the points it costs. That gives a value per point; multiply by the earn rate and you finally have a return per dirham you can compare across banks.
Watch the exclusions
Government payments, rent, utilities, education, insurance and fuel are frequently excluded from earning, or earn at a reduced rate. For many households that is a large share of monthly card spending.
Expiry and redemption thresholds
Points that expire after two or three years, or that cannot be redeemed until you reach a minimum balance, are worth less than the earn rate suggests. Both details sit on the individual card pages.
