When a premium card earns its fee
Premium cards are priced on access rather than on earn rate. Unlimited lounge visits, airport transfers, golf, concierge and hotel status can be worth several thousand dirhams a year to somebody who uses them and nothing at all to somebody who does not. The arithmetic is personal, and it is worth doing honestly before applying.
Add up only the benefits you will genuinely use in the next twelve months, priced at what they would cost you to buy. If that total does not clear the annual fee, the card one tier down is usually the better product: the difference in rewards between a premium tier and the one below it is rarely wide enough to close the gap on its own.
Of the 33 premium cards on this page, 9 carry no annual fee and the most expensive costs AED 3,150 a year. Minimum salaries run from AED 5,000 to AED 50,000 a month, across 11 banks.
Fee waivers change the maths
Many issuers reverse the first-year fee, or waive it each year once you cross a spend threshold. A waiver you will realistically hit turns the calculation around, so find the threshold before you rule the card out.
Salary is a hard gate
Premium tiers sit behind the highest income requirements in the market and banks apply them strictly. Salary transfer, a relationship with the bank or membership of a wealth segment is sometimes required on top of the published figure.
Supplementary cards
Free supplementary cards extend lounge access and insurance to family on some products and not on others. For a household, that one detail often decides which card is better value.
