Cashback buying guide
How to read a UAE cashback offer
The headline percentage is the least useful number on a cashback card. What decides your return is the detail underneath it: which merchant categories qualify, how much of your spending the bank will pay on before the rate stops, and whether you have to hit a minimum spend that month for the rate to apply at all.
A card advertising 10% on groceries that caps the category at AED 200 a month pays at most AED 2,400 a year, however much you buy. A flat 1% card with no cap can beat it comfortably once your spending is high enough. Work out your own monthly spend in each bonus category, apply the cap, and compare the dirhams rather than the percentages.
Of the 29 cashback cards on this page, 15 carry no annual fee and the most expensive costs AED 997.50 a year. Minimum salaries run from AED 5,000 to AED 40,000 a month, across 13 banks.
Caps are the real ceiling
Almost every high cashback rate in the UAE is capped per category, per statement, or both. Multiply your realistic monthly spend by the rate, stop at the cap, and you have the number that is worth comparing.
Minimum spend clauses
Several cards pay the headline rate only in months where total spending clears a threshold, and drop to a base rate below it. If your spending is uneven, the quiet-month rate matters more than the best-month rate.
Where the money lands
Statement credit is worth face value. Cashback paid as retailer points, a wallet balance or vouchers is only worth what you would have spent there anyway - treat that as a discount, not as cash.
