What is Marriott Bonvoy?

  • Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty programme of Marriott International.
  • It covers more than 30 hotel brands across roughly 10,000 destinations.
  • JW Marriott is one of those brands, not a separate scheme - the same points work at JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, W, Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien, Courtyard, Aloft and the rest.
  • Joining is free. One account earns and spends everywhere in the group.
  • Two things are tracked separately: points (what you spend) and nights (what sets your elite tier).

How many points you earn per stay

Points are earned on the room and on most other hotel charges - dining, drinks, spa and golf included. The base rate depends on the brand:

  • Elite bonus on top: Silver +10%, Gold +25%, Platinum +50%, Titanium and Ambassador +75%.
  • Example: a US$1,000 stay at a JW Marriott earns 10,000 base points - 15,000 for a Platinum member.
  • Points post on qualifying charges only; deposits and third-party bookings usually do not count.

Earning Bonvoy points in the UAE without a stay

Co-branded cards

  • Emirates NBD issues the two Marriott Bonvoy Mastercards in the UAE.
  • Both earn points on every purchase, not just hotel spending.
  • Both include instant elite status and yearly Elite Night Credits.
  • Both are listed further down this page.

Convert other rewards

  • Emirates Islamic SmartMiles list Marriott Bonvoy as a transfer partner.
  • Some premium cards include Bonvoy nights as a perk.
  • Check the conversion rate before moving points - it is rarely one for one.

Dining and partners

  • Earn on hotel restaurants and bars without staying the night.
  • The More Cravings app carries Bonvoy dining offers across the region.
  • Car hire, retail and event bookings also earn.

What is a Marriott Bonvoy point worth?

  • Marriott publishes no fixed cash value and no fixed award chart.
  • Room prices in points move with demand, like cash prices.
  • Free nights start at 12,000 points a night.
  • Work out your own rate: cash price of the room ÷ points needed.
  • Example: a AED 900 room for 20,000 points is about 4.5 fils per point.
  • Independent trackers usually land near 0.7 to 0.9 US cents per point (per third-party sources).
  • Rule of thumb: expensive city and resort nights give the best return; cheap roadside hotels give the worst.

Book 5 nights on points Pay only 4 the 5th night is free - a 20% saving

How to spend Bonvoy points

Free nights - from 12,000 points at over 30 brands. No blackout dates on standard rooms.
Stay 5, pay 4 - book five straight nights on points and the fifth is free.
Cash + Points - part cash, part points when you are short of a full free night.
PointSavers - selected hotels discounted below their usual points price.
Airline miles - transfer to 38 airlines at 3:1, including Emirates Skywards and Etihad Guest.
Moments and experiences - concerts, sport and dining events bookable with points.

Turning Bonvoy points into airline miles

  • Standard rate: 3 Bonvoy points = 1 airline mile, with 38 airline programmes.
  • Bonus: transfer 60,000 points and Marriott adds 5,000 extra miles.
  • So 60,000 points become 25,000 miles, not 20,000.
  • United MileagePlus gets a bigger 10,000-mile bonus per 60,000 points.
  • No bonus on American AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles or Delta SkyMiles.
  • Transfer limits: 3,000 to 240,000 points a day.
  • Both UAE airlines are partners - Emirates Skywards and Etihad Guest, each at 3:1.

Worth knowing: transferring usually loses value. Free nights normally beat miles unless you need a specific award seat.

60,000 Bonvoy points 3:1 20,000 miles + 5,000 bonus = 25,000 total miles
The 60,000-point bonus is the only time transferring looks generous.

Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?

  • Yes - after 24 months of no activity on your account.
  • Any earning or spending resets the clock: a stay, a card purchase, a redemption, a points purchase or a partner transfer in.
  • Gifting points to someone else does not reset it.
  • Holding an active co-branded card effectively keeps the account alive month to month.
  • Lifetime Elite members are not subject to the 24-month rule.

Marriott Bonvoy points questions

JW Marriott is one hotel brand inside Marriott Bonvoy, which is the loyalty programme covering more than 30 brands. Points earned at a JW Marriott can be spent at a Sheraton, a W, a Ritz-Carlton or any other participating brand, and the other way round.

Ten base points per US$1 at most brands including JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, W, Sheraton and Westin. Long-stay brands such as Residence Inn and Element pay 5 points, and StudioRes pays 4. Elite members add a bonus on top: 10% at Silver up to 75% at Titanium and Ambassador.

Marriott publishes no fixed value and prices rooms dynamically. Free nights start at 12,000 points. The practical test is the cash price divided by the points needed - a AED 900 room for 20,000 points is about 4.5 fils per point. Independent trackers usually estimate 0.7 to 0.9 US cents (per third-party sources).

Yes, after 24 consecutive months with no account activity. Any earning or spending resets the clock - a stay, a redemption, a points purchase or a co-branded card transaction. Gifting points to another member does not. Lifetime Elite members are exempt.

Yes, with 38 airline programmes at 3 points to 1 mile, and Marriott adds 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred, so 60,000 points become 25,000 miles. Emirates Skywards and Etihad Guest are both partners. Transfers usually return less value than free nights.

Book five consecutive nights using points and Marriott charges for four. It applies to standard reward nights and is the easiest way to stretch a balance on a long trip.

Emirates NBD issues both UAE cards: the Marriott Bonvoy World Elite Mastercard and the Marriott Bonvoy World Mastercard. Both are listed on this page, and both include Marriott elite status from day one.
