What are Skywards Tier Miles?

Tier Miles are the status counter of Emirates Skywards. They cannot be spent: their only job is to decide whether you are a Blue, Silver, Gold or Platinum member. You earn them by flying with Emirates and flydubai, one for one with the Skywards Miles a fare pays - a Dubai to Mumbai return earns 400 Tier Miles on an Economy Special fare and 1,800 on Flex Plus, per the official calculator.

One thing UAE members should know: spending on a UAE Skywards credit card earns Skywards Miles but not Tier Miles - Emirates' card Tier Miles offer applies to its USA cards only. Status here is earned in the air. Your spendable balance is a separate story: our guide to Skywards Miles covers it.

Limited window · 80% tier targets until 31 August 2026 Silver 20,000 instead of 25,000 Tier Miles
Gold 40,000 instead of 50,000 Tier Miles
Platinum 120,000 instead of 150,000 · qualifying flight rules still apply

How many Tier Miles you need for each tier

Once you reach a tier you keep its privileges for 12 months, then your Tier Miles are reviewed again. These are the standard thresholds:

TierTo reach itExtra conditionBonus miles on flights
BlueFree to join--
Silver25,000 Tier Miles-+30%
Gold50,000 Tier Miles-+75%
Platinum150,000 Tier MilesAt least one qualifying First or Business Class flight+100%

Temporary reduction: until 31 August 2026 you can reach or keep a tier with 80% of the usual Tier Miles - the reduced numbers sit in the highlight card at the top of this page.

Platinum members who keep flying can also activate Tier Miles Rollover, carrying spare Tier Miles into the next membership year - the only tier where extra effort is banked rather than lost.

Where UAE credit cards fit in

Straight answer: a UAE Skywards credit card will not lift your tier. Tier Miles come from flying, and Emirates' co-branded card Tier Miles offer is limited to the USA. What the cards do brilliantly is fill your spendable balance - every dirham of daily spending earns Skywards Miles, which shortens the distance to your next Classic Reward or upgrade.

The premium cards also carry their own travel perks - airport lounge programmes, travel insurance and chauffeur benefits - that overlap with what the middle tiers offer. Each card page below lists exactly what is included, so you can judge the card on its own benefits rather than the tier it will not give you.

Emirates Skywards tier questions

By flying with Emirates and flydubai. Tier Miles accrue one for one with the Skywards Miles your fare earns - a Dubai to Mumbai return earns anywhere from 400 Tier Miles on an Economy Special fare to 1,800 on Flex Plus. Higher fares and cabins earn more.

The standard thresholds are 25,000 Tier Miles for Silver, 50,000 for Gold and 150,000 for Platinum, which also needs at least one qualifying First or Business Class flight. Until 31 August 2026, 80% of the Tier Miles target is enough: 20,000, 40,000 and 120,000.

A tier is valid for 12 months from the month you reach it, and your Tier Miles are then reviewed for the next year. Fall short and you move down. Platinum members can activate Tier Miles Rollover, which carries spare Tier Miles into the next membership year.

No - Emirates limits its card Tier Miles offer to the USA. UAE cards earn spendable Skywards Miles on every purchase, which is what shortens the path to reward flights, but tier status itself is earned by flying.

Since 1 April 2023, reaching or keeping Platinum requires at least one qualifying flight in First or Business Class on top of the 150,000 Tier Miles. Economy-only flyers top out at Gold, however many Tier Miles they collect.

Silver members get the Emirates Business Class Lounge in Dubai. Gold adds selected Emirates lounges worldwide and flydubai lounge access. Platinum unlocks Emirates First and Business Class lounges in Dubai and worldwide, with guests. Blue members can pay for lounge entry.

A Platinum benefit: you can gift Gold tier membership to a spouse, partner or friend for the duration of your Platinum year - one of the most valuable perks in the programme if you travel as a pair.

Your tier travels with you: bonus Skywards Miles, priority check-in, extra baggage of 12, 16 or 20kg by tier, priority baggage delivery, and lounge access in Dubai and at partner lounges for Gold and Platinum members.
